Spanish
type | 1920-1930's

These houses look fantastic. I also can't recall if
Singapore had or has similar styled houses. To have this many
still standing in JB is an historical asset that I doubt will
be fully appreciated.
These are 1930's period homes in the Spanish colonial revival
style.
This style of house takes its roots from Spanish and Mexican
colonial architecture. This style saw a peak in popularity
in the West between 1915 and 1931.
Most noticeable characteristics used on these particular properties
is the hipped roof, central tower, decorative iron trimmings,
thick carved front wooded doors and window frames.
Some properties also feature balconies, and in keeping with
the Spanish style, it has naturally been designed to be narrow
in width and looks to be more show than go.
There are around 12 such houses still standing along the straits
of Johor. There is also one other house near the public park,
it is now being used as a Police cantine.
However the fate of ALL the period houses
along straits view hang in the balance as there are new plans
for a large water front development.
